I grew up in the rural Iowa town of Williamsburg, where I have been in the entertainment business since the young age of 14. I started playing drums in my first country rock band in high school, and from there I went on to play at the Iowa State Fair, did several auditions for Adventureland, and Opryland in Nashville, TN, where I was put on recall or 2nd runner up. I played the local circuit with many bands around Iowa, including some of the top Iowa City DJs. I traveled with several road bands across the United States, fronting shows for Nashville recording acts such as Dave and Sugar, The Whites, Hank Thompson, Shelly West, Freddy Fender, and many more. The story of how IRBD came about is quite amusing. I have always played drums in local bands, but when a couple of my best friends were getting married, they sought my advice on finding a band for their wedding. They were shocked at the prices of local bands at the time, so I suggested, 'You know, DJs are becoming a thing now for weddings.' Keep in mind this was back in 1988 when DJs for weddings were not really heard of. They checked around and came back to me saying that DJs were also expensive, so I offered, 'Hey, I own my own small PA; we can all bring CDs, and I will do your wedding for you.' Once my mom heard I was doing a DJ job, she exclaimed, 'YOU NEED A NAME FOR YOUR DJ SERVICE!' I replied, 'Mom, this is a one-time thing to help my friends out; I’d Rather Be Drumming.' Hence, the name IRBD was born. Well, here we are many years later, and IRBD has stood the test of time. We are still here, doing better than ever, with all new lights and PA, an unlimited song list, and we’ve even done karaoke on several occasions.
